This piece was commissioned by The Handbell Brothers blog as part of a challenge issued between two groups of ringers – one in Reno, another in Seattle. Not having seen it before, each group had two hours to prepare and ring it! Of course, they had to be tipsy. It is based on the sea shanty “What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?” – famously performed by the Irish Rovers. It is delightfully unique and a fun challenge for your advanced quartet. (As an aside, we doubt it could be played very well by ringers who are actually tipsy.)

Rimsky-Korsakov was quite proud of his Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34, which features five Spanish folk melodies. Robin selected several of the main themes for this arrangement, keeping them faithful to the original: Alborada which also includes variations on that theme, Fandango, with Alborada reprised at the end. It is basically ‘rung’ throughout with perfectly placed shakes and mallets plus a few mart-lifts, all of which complement the original. Addition of handchimes in one of the lovely variations adds color to the piece. The optional tambourine and castañets top it off! Your solid Level 3+ ensemble will rock this work and audiences will love it!
