Brian has combined two German hymns in a handbell solo with organ (or keyboard) accompaniment that is gorgeous and uplifting. Sonne der Gerchtigkeit was a 15th century chorale which appears in many hymnals with joyful lyrics such as “Come, O come, our voices raise…” and “Easter triumph, Easter joy!” Joined with Lyra Davidica – “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” – this is the perfect Easter solo! The solo is specifically arranged so the bells will fit on one, 3-foot table. Suggested setup and bell choreography is included in the score. The organ accompaniment is exquisite and adds just the right amount of support without overwhelming the bells. (Keyboard could be used). It ends with an exciting flourish of bells which is repeated in the organ pedals. Solo ringers are sure to want this in their repertoire! 3 octaves of handbells needed (B5-C7)

This lovely hymn was written by Dan Schutte for the ordination of a deacon, while he was studying at the Jesuit School of Theology. He was asked to include in the lyrics, “God’s word, of Jesus as the light, and the bread and wine of the eucharist.” And all this on very short notice! Needless to say – he rose to the challenge, and this has become a favorite hymn of many. The beautiful solo setting was arranged by Tammera Missell in loving memory of her parents, with Jason Krug creating the gorgeous accompaniment. The score comes complete with piano part and the solo part – both with and without the soloist’s choreographic notations.

Champaca is a plant from which an essential oil is extracted that is “used as an anti-depressant and said to soothe and relax the body and strengthen the mind.” This delightful new work from Elizabeth Peters will certainly lift the spirits and leave the mind and body feeling joyful. It dances from beginning to end featuring time signatures of 6/8 and 2/4 with melodies and countermelodies intermingling with pulsing 2/4 marted measures. The lilting, triplet-feel eighth-notes in the upper treble in many of the 6/8 measures adds to the joy of this work. LV patterns are featured as accompaniment to melodies and dynamics range from p to f with crescendo added for more excitement. The rhythmic patterns may initially appear to be challenging but are repeated so it is fully accessible for the Level 3 group. It will also be a bit of a challenge for Level 4 and 5 groups to play flawlessly at tempo.

When the players are all in place, faster, joyous rhythms break out with the addition of the drum set. This setting of three favorite Advent and Christmas songs has been artfully arranged for two complete, 5 or 6-octave handbell choirs and has several options which will offer interesting performance choices. A director can opt for a processional, a bell tree and the Singing Bell technique. A keyboard can play one of the choir parts as written by simply omitting the top notes in a few measures. This is a lovely arrangement which is easily accessible for the level 3 ensemble. “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is in the key of E Minor. which modulates to E Major on “Of the Father’s Love Begotten”, then returns to E Minor for “What Child Is This”.

Brian has arranged this moving work by composer, Johann Cruger, for handbell solo with piano accompaniment. It begins with a bell solo line expressively ringing the melody, followed by a segue with piano taking over the melody and soloist ringing a counter-melody. The melody again moves back to the bells with increasing drama, culminating in angst-filled, dissonant chords in the piano – a powerful depiction of Christ’s pain on the cross. The work ends with the solo ringing the plaintive melody, as in the beginning.
