Ernest Sands has been described as a "bucolic, witty, and charismatic priest and composer", and this song certainly reflects those feelings. It was written in 1981, chosen for the 1991 installation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and became a hit in the UK and United States. The first thing one notices is its similarity to Brubeck’s "Take Five" in that it is written in 5/4 meter. The melody is engaging and Kyle has used articulations to emphasize and vary the feel. Mallets, plucks, TD, handchimes, and mallet-clicks add to the joy of this piece. This is a fabulous arrangement and is sure to become a favorite 'go-to' piece for your group! When the familiar words of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” are sung, the hymn tune, ST. LOUIS, is the one most often heard in the United States. In the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland, one hears these words sung to the FOREST GREEN tune which was collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and first published in the 1906 English Hymnal. As a tribute to the international nature of the fellowship of the handbell community, this arrangement uses both of these tunes. To add to the visual aspect of the handbell performance, a new suspended mallet technique is employed at the beginning and the end of the piece.

Written for the Stow Heritage Ringers of Stow Ohio, this energized original composition, “Toccata Festivo”, is the inaugural piece in a brand new series of pieces which contains specifically written “concert etudes” for handbells. Much in the tradition of Chopin’s Op. 10 and Op. 25 or Debussy’s Etudes (L 136) for piano, these pieces will take one or two specific technical concepts and set them in a piece of music appropriate for late intermediate to advanced handbell ensembles. The pieces are designed to be friendly to an audience while also developing or showcasing the specific skill. “Toccata Festivo” is a study in rhythm and endurance – intense and prolonged segments of fast passage work, syncopated rhythms, and changing meter abound in this exciting work. Inspirations for the concept included Chopin’s Op. 10, No. 4 & 12, and Op. 25, No. 11, but the work very much remains its own.

A Martha Lynn Thompson transcription of "The Thieving Magpie" by Gioacchino Rossini. Composed in 1817, the overture to this fun two-act opera sets a military tone about the mystery of a stolen spoon, actually taken by the bird. It’s said that Rossini was locked in a room and he dropped pages of music for the copyists from the window. Based on a Mannheim Steamroller arrangement, this Christmas title should have ringers "rocking and rolling" with its mallet uses and fast rock tempo. It may be best to start slowly and work up to the faster tempo, especially with the offbeat eighth notes in the lower treble clef. Nearly constant eighth notes in the bass, many of them being malleted, drive the piece as well. This rendition, which is arranged primarily in G Major, is 120 measures.

The name "Pavane and Galliard" comes from two Renaissance dances. During this period, dances were often paired and based on similar harmonic or melodic material. A slower dance would be followed by a faster dance. This model served as inspiration for the work. Although using the names of the dances, this composition bears little resemblance to the more subdued dances of that period. It is 171 measures in length.

Nollirac Carillon! What an interesting title … is there a cathedral called 'Nollirac' somewhere, one wonders? Well – only in the fertile and creative mind of Fred Gramann! From Fred’s program notes: "The word nollirac is carillon spelled backwards. This is reflected in the music by certain motifs being first heard backwards (in reverse order like the word nollirac) and then forward (like the word carillon)." There are three examples given in the program notes that show how the motifs designated by the letter A are the B motifs in reverse order... the notes CDFEAGCB are reversed to become BCGAEFDC. Tempo is q = 124 (Allegro) and mixed meters abound with 7/8 being used most frequently. Generous use of LV creates the carillon sound with RT, malleted notes, and occasional marts providing exciting emphasis. Accents are essential to ensure precision and dynamics are important as this music is unrelenting in its forward movement. A brief handchime section brings a delightful change in texture and style although the pulse continues into a mostly 'stopped technique' section which leads back to the opening 7/8 pattern and style. Did we mention that there are wonderful opportunities for ringers to hone their reading and bell-changing skills due to many accidentals?

Le Cygne (The Swan) is number 13 of fourteen movements of Camille Saint-Saëns delightful musical suite, Le Carnaval des Animaux (Carnival of the Animals) – and is the only movement that Saint-Saëns would allow to be published during his lifetime. It was originally written for solo cello and two pianos which inspired Fred to create this transcription for separate handbell and handchime choirs. It is very, very close to the original work and even includes the sound of little ‘drops of water’ which were included in the original 2nd piano score. Marked to be played slowly and gracefully plus perfect placement of LV, R, dynamics, and nuance throughout will create a feeling of longing and beauty. This title was arranged specifically for Distinctly Bronze West 2024.

This amazing work written by Argentinian composer, Astor Piazzolla in 1982 for the soundtrack to the film Henry IV is in the style of a tango including elements of jazz and even classical influence. His particular style of tango has been appropriately called nuevo tango. The melody is almost haunting in its beauty and the arranger has beautifully preserved the original style in this transcription for handbells and handchimes. Oblivion is written so well that ringers will respond to its innate musicality and play it with the expression it deserves. Key of C Minor with hints of G Minor. 77 measures.

On January 12, 2017, Universal Music Latin released "Despacito" and its music video, which shows both artists performing the song in La Perla neighborhood of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and the local bar La Factoría. The song was written by Fonsi, Erika Ender, and Daddy Yankee, and was produced by Mauricio Rengifo and Andrés Torres. A remix version featuring Canadian singer Justin Bieber was released on April 17, 2017, which helped to improve the song's chart performance in numerous countries, including various number-one positions. "Despacito" has been widely credited by several music journalists as being instrumental in popularizing Spanish-language pop music in the mainstream market again. Throughout all of life’s trials, hope gives us the strength to rebuild and confidently reinvent our circumstances. "Rays of Hope" is an original piece for handbells that depicts the remnants of a storm that has passed, and then begins to hint at the light that is coming to bring us a new day. The opening illustrates the passing unrest and gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle section reminds the listener that uncluttered days are never a given and should not be soon forgotten. But hope does return with the theme to round out the ending of the piece. Techniques such as singing bell, suspended bells with mallets, thumb damp and LV are incorporated. The texture of the piece is further enhanced by the addition of chime tree, ocean drum and/or rain sticks and optional handchimes, all combining to add interest.
