Composed for the 2012 International Handbell Symposium in Liverpool, England, this work is based on the tune "Liverpool" written by John Roberts (1822-1877). Heard throughout is a contrasting motif formed by spelling the word LIVERPOOL in musical notes. Several stately treatments of the tune are followed by a toccata-like section where all ringers have active, challenging roles to play. The final verse includes lyrics added by Fred Gramann that speak of the various roles played by bells and their power to bring unity. This can be sung by the ringers if desired and/or can be printed for the listeners so they can participate.
This exciting tune was written for the hit movie, Flashdance, and was an immediate hit. It earned a platinum record and has remained popular since, having been covered by many artists over the years. Ron has used a variety of techniques effectively placed to emphasize the natural rhythm of the work plus created scores for optional bass, drums, and keyboard. The keyboard score uses SynthBass and SynthStrings which tops off the overall effect of the piece. However, it will stand alone or with any one or combination of the optional accompaniments. This toe-tapper will be a big hit and ringers will love performing it!
Camille Saint-Saëns was a gifted musician, performer, and composer – a true prodigy. Saint-Saëns wrote more than 300 works for symphonies, operas, organ, piano, and violin concertos and more! He was highly regarded by his contemporaries and did much to develop and solidly establish the French style of music in the Romantic era. Trois Préludes et Fugues, Op. 99, written for organ, includes this Prelude No. 2 – which is graceful and melodic yet sophisticated and engaging. It features flowing, pastoral melodies featured in both the treble and bass, all supported by gentle triplet patterns which have the feel of calm tremolos. This simple and engaging German tune was written in 1790 as a secular song, but was joined with lyrics written by a Catholic priest and published in 1837. Marquise has created this Christmas favorite featuring the sweet melody supported by a gentle syncopated rhythm and flowing LV accompaniment. Handchimes take the melody in places and the addition of the low handchimes grounds the work and balances out the high bells nicely. It has a variety of dynamics that expands to ff – but should still remain gentle in feel and never harsh. This is definitely a ‘must have’ addition to your handbell repertoire!

We welcome Christian Guebert to the Evergreen Music catalog with his gorgeous original composition Appassionato. Exposed and sensitive, your ensemble will have plenty of opportunity for some gorgeous musicality. From the composer: "An uncomplicated instrumental love song with flowing lines, Appassionato spent most of its performance history as a piece for handbell ensemble, but it started as #7 of 24 piano exercises from my undergraduate days when I met Megan who suggested a pattern based on the first six notes. We got married seven years later, I started working with bell tower and handbell music, and the piece went the way of lots of my music -- to the bells.”

Caleb has conceived and created an amazing piece reminiscent of Early American folk music, filled with exciting rhythm and energy, including a melody that will stay with you after this toe-tapping work has ended. Caleb wrote: “Ciderkin was a diluted yet still alcoholic version of cider served to children in early America. Finding this tidbit of history on the cusp of my 21st birthday intrigued me and I immediately thought there was a song there… it turns out there was!” Filled with syncopation emphasized by RT, malleted notes and marts, it moves along at a jaunty pace.
