Gustav Holst wrote two Suites for concert band and the Second Suite in F (Op. 28, No. 2) was the last. Seven folk tunes of the time are compressed into this work. Each of these suites is unique in character and delightfully arranged for handbells and handchimes. Alex has done a masterful job of integrating bells and chimes, stopped sounds and legato passages, making each of the movements a delight. Level of difficulty varies with suggested tempo being one of the factors. Addition of optional anvil and tambourine add to the works. Multiple levels. This original composition is based on Romans 15:5-6, which calls Christians to be of one mind and one voice. The first 16 measures may be played with chimes, and would add to the open effect of the texture. A second section includes mallets. This beautiful ‘Motette’ was the last of Charles Viliers Stanford’s Three Latin Motets, published in 1905, for mixed, unaccompanied six-part choir. Incorporating 3 octaves of handchimes into its mystical fabric, this original composition is based on a 1901 song sent in for a high school competition in Japan. It soon became famous and has been a favorite ever since. Truly an impressionistic piece, the arranger weaves the "Sakura" melody into the score and includes notes at the end. There is wide dynamic diversity along with abundant challenges to bring out the melody and counter melodies. This piece was originally rated level 5 – but it plays nicely as a level 4.

This is a collection of three traditional Scottish folk tunes arranged for two to three octaves of handbells or handchimes. An original work that is every bit reflective of its title: Énergique! Written for two choirs with different ability levels and differing sets of handbells, this works well in a festival setting or even within a community or church group with one 5-octave and another 3-octave set. In addition, the inclusion of ‘alternate bells’ such as Petit-Fritsen, Silver Melody Bells etc adds that extra interest. In the absence of those alternate sets, that part may be rung with handchimes or bells. There are enough techniques and energy to keep everyone engaged.
Three processionals are included in this folio: one in F major (with a hint of “Hymn to Joy”), one in C major (with a chime or optional C instrument part), and one based on the hymn “God of Grace and God of Glory”. Sueda has arranged Karen Buckwalter’s lovely Faith Trilogy for handbell solo with piano accompaniment. The three songs included in this work are “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” (key of Ab Major), “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (A Major)” and “It Is Well With My Soul (C Major & A Major)”. All three songs are creatively interwoven between the solo bells and the accompaniment. It is medium in difficulty and will be a wonderful addition to the solo ringer’s repertoire. 68 measures.

An entertaining, high spirited quartet arrangement of this Kabelevsky classic, the arrangers included thumb damps, malleting and marting along with traditional ringing to express the intensity of this composition. It is sure to be an audience pleaser in any situation. Set in c minor, it is 47 measures but does have a coda section to lengthen it.
This original work is actually a suite of three pieces – Hymn, Song, and Dance – all built around a shared melody but with completely different styles. ‘Hymn’ is in 4/4 time and quite steady in meter, consisting mainly of quarter notes with passing eighths. ‘Song’ is written in 12/8 with a flowing pattern of three eighth notes throughout. ‘Dance’ is quite lively and rhythmic, written in 2/4, with a jig-type feel and a variety of stopped techniques.
Carol and Jane have used Hart Morris’s handbell arrangement of the spiritual to craft a lovely and accessible handbell solo. Beginning with the plaintive melody rung on handchimes, this solo will add inspiration to any worship or concert setting.

One most interesting feature of this setting is that the time signature is in 8/8. 68 measures in length, this rendition of “Immortal Invisible” is arranged in G Major, Ab Major, and A Major.

This setting of the familiar Christmas carol is a refreshing arrangement for the handbell soloist, with piano accompaniment. It opens with a straightforward presentation of the well known carol. After an optional repeat and key change (from D Major to C Major), the piano accompaniment takes over for 14 measures, allowing the handbell soloist to prepare the bell tree which is used for the remainder of the piece. The final 25 measures feature the piano performing the melody with the soloist playing an obligato on the bell tree.
This is a sensitive, interpretive arrangement of the wonderful hymn tune, KINGSFOLD. The interaction between the flute and the solo is magical – all supported by a flowing and lyrical piano accompaniment. Playing the melody in both bells and handchimes adds to the beauty. Derek has included many tempo variations which offer opportunities for amazing expression. Simply said: this is gorgeous. All parts are included.

This charming ensemble setting of the traditional Austrian carol was the winner of the 2012 Alberta Guild of English Handbell Ringers Composition Contest. The melody moves among all of the ringers throughout the piece, presenting the challenge for ringers to be aware of whether they are ringing melody or accompaniment.
Finally, groups with only 2 octaves have a collection for six ringers! The four songs in this group are scored for the standard ringing positions B4-F6 with B4/C5 in the treble clef. "Procession of the Priests," level 2 in Bb Major, is stately; "Placid Stream," level 1 also in Bb Major, is nice on chimes; "Chapel Echoes" (Bb Major) has level 1 rhythms but a few bell changes for B5 and E6; and "O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee" (Eb Major) is a level 1+ due to one easy bell change for A5.
As the title suggests, this collection for 6 ringers (B4–F6) features Christmas titles with suggestions for non-seasonal titles. In E-major The Christmas Star (Starlight) gives five of the six Level 1 ringers an opportunity to use their “black” bells. The Heavenly Host (Cherubim) is scored for both bells and chimes. Bell changes for two positions plus changes from chimes to bells put the composition at Level 2 despite its Level 1 rhythms. Although The First Nowell is definitely Level 2, the rhythms should not be too hard if the ringers know the melody or words. This carol can be used beyond Christmas because stanza 5 describes the magi, making it suitable for Epiphany.
“Upbeat!” is exactly that! A lively piece that features….upbeats! Carefully and clearly scored for “new-to-8th-note” ringers, this jaunty piece is easy to ring yet sounds big and complex, so even more established groups will enjoy ringing it as well. The sprightly melody is played in all ranges. Two non-compatible score formats allow full ringer participation according to the bell range and number of ringers available: Score “B” (3 or 5 oct., Level 2-) features 8th note pairs that are always set within a single ringing position (both notes are played by one person), making them easier to play (Level 2-). Score “A” (2 octaves, Level 2) is set in a different key to accommodate the smaller range, shifting these 8th note relationships around; so two ringers might share ringing responsibilities for the two 8th notes within a beat (a slightly more complex skill – making Score “A” Level 2).

A beloved Norwegian folk song, “Per Fiddler,” springs to life with a lively waltz bass and an intriguing little countermelody. In this case, 3 ringing positions are somewhat easier (B4C5, D5E5 and F5G5) at Level 1+; and a special extracted score for these ringers is included, if needed, to support them in quickly learning new skills and succeeding in ringing.
