Two selections are for level 1: "Joyous News" (G Major) and "Happy Ending" (D Major). Two are scored for level 2: "Quiet Moments" (g minor) and "Hymn to Joy" (G Major). There are no page turns and all are usable for school or church.
Awesome Presence, a collection of three pieces for four ringers, is scored for D5 – D6. "Infinite Being" is very easy. In 3/4 meter, "Sacred Dance" is also Level 1; choir chimes enhance its effect. Both of these titles can be rung without tables. "Joyful Blessings" uses LV and TD; rhythms and bell changes for B5 make it Level 2.
These three interesting pieces scored for C5/E5 plus F5 – F6 do not require ensemble ringing skills. Bubbling with joy, "Exaltate Jubilate" has no bell changes but its rhythms make it Level 2. "Spiral Dance" twists and turns at a lively tempo; the tempo plus 8th notes make it Level 2. Listeners can hear the music ringing across the meadows in "Carilloneurs", a rondo; like "Exaltate Jubilate", "Carilloneurs" can also be rung without tables.
These two pieces scored for four ringers using D5-D6 can be used any time of year by changing the first word in the title from Christmas to Easter, Spring, Summer, or Winter. The Level 1 selection "Christmas Pastorale" is nice on handchimes. Eighth notes make "Christmas Greeting" a Level 2 composition; its livelier mood lends itself to bells. There are no bell changes or page turns; thus these pieces can easily be played away from tables.
"Prairie Morn", a two octave composition for both handbells and handchimes, opens with a chordal introduction on handchimes followed by a clear melody scored for handbells over a handchime accompaniment. The second theme using all handchimes leads back to the first melody. Although the changes between handbells and handchimes for the treble clef positions put it at Level 1+, the rhythms are Level 1. Alternate assignments are suggested for the F5/G5 handbells to avoid the overlapping of handchimes and handbells for that ringer. Even though "Prairie Morn" is more effective with both handbells and handchimes, it can be rung with either instrument alone. 43 measures in length, "Prairie Morn" is scored in G Major.
Here is another collection suitable for many different occasions. Written for 6 ringers, these titles work for handbells or handchimes; two are scored for both. "Psalm of Life" has Level 1 rhythms but bell changes for five of the ringers. "By the Waters of Life", Level 2, sounds best with both handbells and handchimes, as well as "Canticle"; a quick change between bells and chimes affects several positions. "Joyous Life", a short piece in alla breve, is suitable for handchimes but more appealing played on handbells.
Three original compositions make up this collection for 6 ringers. Scale passages in eighth notes characterize the first melody of "Episode"; C6 has the only bells changes. "Pastorale in G", a Level 1 piece in 3/4 meter, in nice on handchimes. "Festival" uses Level 2 rhythms; it has one page turn but no bell changes.
"The Garden", a quiet, original composition for 2 or 3 octaves, has a beautiful melody in the upper bells supported by a rich harmonic accompaniment of quarter notes on chimes. The piece was inspired a new rose garden at a local church; it would be suitable for school or church and could be used during Lent. Even though it can be played with bells or chimes, the use of both tone colors adds to its beauty. The rhythms are Level 1 but bell changes classify it at Level 2. It is 49 measures and is written in Ab Major.
"Greet the Day", collection for six ringers using B4—F6, is classified as Level 1 due to the easy rhythms but two of the subtitles are really Level 1+ due to bell changes for a couple ringers. Suggestions are given for reassigning the quick bell changes in "The Forest Blooms". The B5 ringer has two bell changes in "Sailing". There are no bell changes in "Softly in the Morning"; it is nice on chimes. The final song, "Stepping Lightly", breaks away from the 3/4 meter of the other titles in the collection.
Played on chimes, the two carols in this arrangement for two octaves can help create a special mood on Christmas Eve. "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" features the melody in the bottom octave. The easy bell changes for F5 and F6 make it Level 1+. The melody of "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly" begins in the lower octave and moves to the upper octave at the third phrase. Bell changes for G4, F5 and G5 plus eighth notes classify it as Level 2. "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" is also suitable for Lent.
This collection of three original compositions for five ringers (D5-F6) uses Level 2 rhythms plus bell changes for some positions. #1-Concert Piece has a variety of dynamic levels and ends with a martellato. In #2-Mysterious Melody the dynamic level gradually builds from soft to loud; one section uses thumb damps. The melody of #3-Joyous Etude contains several short sequential fragments. This piece requires a page turn.
The title of this original collection, suitable for bells or chimes, highlights the fact the “3rds” are the most common harmonic option when scoring for only six pitches. Easy eighth notes put #1-Victory (51 measures; key of G Major) at Level 2; otherwise it is very easy and would be suitable for Easter or any other festive occasion. Two pickup notes in #2-Belltones (42 measures; key of G Major; level 1) provide an uncommon rhythmic problem; it would be an excellent choice for new ringers. There are 2 bell changes for F5 plus several measures of LV in #3-An Old Legend (51 measures; key of G Minor). New ringers should be able to play #4-Miniature Melody (20 measures, with one repeat; key of G Major) without any trouble.
This medley for six ringers (B4–F6) contains four familiar carols: "It Came upon the Midnight Clear" (D Major), "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (Ab Major), "What Child Is This" (G Minor) and "Silent Night" (C Major). Although the score calls for both bells and chimes, it can be played with only one tone color. Short bridges between carols make this medley flow smoothly; however, any carol in the medley may be rung as a single piece. Directions are included for using the transitional measures as an introduction to single carol. The 6/8 meter in three of the carols designates them as Level 3; many quick bell changes could also be considered Level 3. The meter should not be a problem if the ringers are familiar with these carols and alternative assignments are suggested for the difficult bell changes. Ideal for any Christmas Eve service, this medley would be a genuine asset for choirs that will be short a few ringers during the holiday season.
The bass register is highlighted at the beginning of this setting of the gospel hymn tune. Later, the music builds as melody in octaves enters along with simple accompaniment. The few eighth note patterns and mostly chordal style scoring makes this a natural bridge from Level I repertoire to easy Level II. 54 measures in length. "Resounding Faith Series".
This original is written for a full five octave choir at level two, a much needed resource in the level two repertoire! The tempo is vigorous but with simple rhythms and a few bell changes. Mallets on tabled bells accompany a second statement of the theme. This is a full and bold selection for a concert. All ringers stay involved for all ninety-seven measures.
This Ron Mallory original composition is a perfect piece for ensembles that are moving from Level 1 to Level 2 music. It’s also a great piece for groups new to 4 or 5 octaves. The ringers are sure to enjoy the several different techniques are used throughout the piece. As with all Foundations editions, teaching notes and unison exercises are included.
Mary Had a Baby is only 33 measures long, chordal in texture with some staccato technique in the bass clef. Extensive performance notes are given along with a rhythmic, warm-up exercise. Perfect for level I ringers or as sight-reading for level II.
This piece is written in Rondo form. In "Bingo's Travels," the Bingo theme returns after Bingo visits the "Erie Canal", "Streets of Laredo" and "Camptown Races." When we sing the Bingo song, we begin by singing all the letters of his name and then leaving one out after each verse. In this arrangement, I have reversed that order, adding one letter and leaving out the music each time we ring the theme. If you have ever seen the Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade, then you know about the relentless, perpetual motion of the music! This piece was originally written for the synthesizer when synthesizers were a brand new novelty, huge machines that only crazy experimental musicians could afford. But the sound is very evocative of bells. "Baroque Hoedown" is not hard to play, but it has to be up tempo; and it has to be FUN, FUN, FUN! As always with Greer/Waugh arrangements, the articulations are suggestions we could agree on, but feel free to use your own ideas to bring a variety of sounds to the party. Because the melody is so catchy and repetitive, it really lends itself to using articulations, dynamics, and even instruments to vary the sounds. Few pieces carry such a perfect association with saying “farewell” as this one, cowboy! The beloved theme from “The Roy Rogers Show” would make a catchy festival ending or concert encore. Highly effective with ringing alone, make it truly “Western” by adding optional temple blocks, tambourine, guitar, fiddle and/or bass! An optional solo gives the fiddle a chance to share the spotlight, and of course the percussion evokes the “clip-clop” of hooves as you ride off into the sunset.
All new ringers, even those who know how to read music, need material to help them develop good ringing skills. Using easy music allows them to concentrate on ringing technique and tracking their notes without the frustration of trying to learn these things from music that has too many new concepts in one piece. Use UP and RINGING to lay a good foundation for any new ringer. If it is necessary to incorporate beginners in an existing group, challenge the non-beginners to ring a "new position" while working through this training material.
Now there is a beginning book for 2 octaves that introduces the same ringing and reading skills as UP AND RINGING! - Carol Dare's earlier method book for 3 octaves. The two books are not compatible because the drills and performance pieces in BUILDING BASIC SKILLS have been rescored to sound good with 2 octaves. Although the pedagogical material works with smaller groups of ringers, the actual performance pieces will only sound good with a full 2 octave group. This text is designed to teach ringers basic ringing skills one step at a time and to provide the director a "ready to use" set of materials.

Written by Moravian lyricist, James Montgomery, the text of Angels from the Realms of Glory tells the story of Christ’s birth from the perspective of the angels, then shepherds, then magi and finally all creation. This arrangement of REGENT SQUARE by Karen Buckwalter begins and ends with a more pastoral feeling of the shepherds keeping watch over their flocks. As the piece progresses, we hear the combined angelic realms of glory, shepherds, magi and all creation worshiping the infant King.

The tune DIM OND JESU by Welsh-American composer Robert Lowry appeared in older Welsh hymnals paired with the text, “Praise the Lord, ye heav’ns adore Him.” Sometime in the early 1900’s, it was also paired with a William Rees text, “Here is Love Vast as the Ocean.” Karen has lifted up her own Welsh ancestry by arranging this lovely, lyrical tune for handbells. It is appropriate for worship and also provides a quiet change of pace in concert settings. If desired it may be played along with a 36 string harp, which has a separate but compatible score.
Samuel Wesley’s monumental hymn, AURELIA, has been arranged for congregational singing, accompanied by handbells, organ, brass, timpani, and SATB choir, However, the handbell score may be played alone if desired, as all the other parts are optional. The third stanza is sung only by the choir (with optional organ), and may be omitted if desired. This great hymn of the church is used many times during the church year, and is especially appropriate for honoring the 500th anniversary of The Reformation.
Originally written for handbells and harp, this arrangement of the tune Ellacombe can be played by two handbell or handchime choirs, or one handbell or handchime choir with harp or piano. This piece is a duet between the two parts, with each part carrying the melody at different times. This would be a wonderful opportunity to get together with another handbell choir, or to have two choirs at one church play together, one choir playing bells and one choir playing chimes.

When We Are Living is an arrangement of the Spanish melody SOMOS DEL SEÑOR. It’s first and last sections feature a simple, malleted Latin beguine rhythm, accompanied by optional claves, maracas, and congas or bongos. In contrast, the middle section is slower and chordal, using handchimes if desired. The percussion and handchimes are all optional, making this piece a flexible and useful addition to the worship, concert, or festival repertoire at any time of year.
This spirited arrangement by Karen Buckwalter is based upon a tune found in a 15th century manuscript which may, in fact, have even earlier folk roots. Although presented here as an arrangement of the hymn, “That Easter Day with Joy was Bright,” this lively melody may also be found in hymnals with the alternate texts of “What Star Is This with Beams So Bright” and “On Jordan’s Banks the Baptists Cry”, making it a versatile handbell piece for Easter, Advent, Christmas or Epiphany. Its optional piano part adds even more drive, exuberance and joy.
Karen Buckwalter’s unique and lyrical arrangement of “Angels We Have Heard on High” pairs handbells and optional chimes with a lovely, optional piano accompaniment. While the melody always remains in the handbell part, the piano accompaniment adds color, musical interest and support for the ringers.

A hauntingly beautiful handbell introduction sets the scene for the timeless “Greensleeves” melody that features the delicate sound of a hammered dulcimer, harp, or harpsichord. Alternatively, the sounds of the solo instrument part may be played on a synthesizer. This combination of solo instrument with handbells and handchimes provides a lovely addition to the worship or concert experience. An optional treble solo (or unison choir) with a simple choral handchime or handbell accompaniment begins this setting of the traditional English Sussex Carol (“On Christmas Night All Christians Sing.”) Alternatively, the solo melody may be played on bells. Subsequent stanzas are played at a quicker tempo, and the increased use of mallets and thumb damps in the rhythmic accompaniment figures lends a dance-like quality to these stanzas. The final triumphant stanza moves into 3/4 meter, followed by a short recap in 6/8. Optional parts for finger cymbals (triangle), tambourine and muffled drum are also included.
Subtitled "Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above," this arrangement of the Bohemian tune MIT FREUDEN ZART joyous and upbeat, It employs jauntily malleted, multi-metered, dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythms in the opening and closing sections, and optional handchimes in a brief, more legato middle section. The arrangement is playable by bells alone, but is even more joyous when the optional percussion instruments are used: finger cymbals or triangle, tambourine, and tenor drum or snare drum with the snares off. Appropriate for most any time in the church year or as a delightful concert addition.
This adaptation of the text from the well-known prayer of St. Francis is a stand-alone, unison or solo anthem with keyboard, or it can be enhanced with 3 octaves of handbells. Much like his popular “How Great Our Joy”, Bill Ingram's strong, sparkling arrangement of the hymn tune CWM RHONDDA is set for two handbell (or handchime) choirs, or for one choir and keyboard. Choir I is for three, four, or five octaves and is Level 3, while Choir II is for two or three octaves (or keyboard) and is Level II. This rendition is set in G Major and is 64 measures.
Dan Edwards has set two strong hymns-- ELLACOMBE and ST. THEODULPH--in a great level one arrangement for 3 or 5 octaves. It is perfect for Palm Sunday or other times throughout the church year. Well crafted and using interesting techniques, your listeners will not suspect it is a Level 1 piece. 96 measures in length, it is scored in G Major.
This lovely hymn by Melody Green has made its way into many of the newer hymnals, and this sensitive arrangement builds to a triumphant last stanza that perfectly expresses its message. Syncopated rhythms throughout and a few 16th notes in the last stanza cause this setting to be listed as level 3, but it will play more like a level 2 arrangement. 79 measures. While visiting a church, the arranger of this inaugural selection in Ring Out! Press' new series: Bells Ring! - Voices Sing! heard the choir sing this upbeat, worship anthem. She explains, "I immediately thought this song would be fun and effective for bells and voices! The music and the text fit together and call even the "grumpiest" Christian to praise the Almighty." The bell part, at first glance seems thick against the 2-part voices. However, voices can drown out the short-sustained bell tone - balance is key.

The rhythm patterns are repetitious and therefore, once learned, they allow the ringers to get into the song. Hart says you have to get your "whole body" into a song and "not just your hands!" This fun spiritual is arranged in C Major, Db Major, D Major, and Eb Major and is 57 measures.
