Mr. McChesney was commissioned to arrange this traditional carol for the Twelfth Night Handbell Festival in Bakersfield, California. A fanfare opens the work over a pedal point. The texture is full and can be rung with 3 to 5 octaves and optional organ and/or brass. Special techniques are used throughout the work. Brass ensemble consists of 2 trumpets, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.
A pull-out from the collection "Extra-Special Spirituals". Lots of fun techniques are used to "jazz" up the riverside, alternating accompaniment simulates rippling in the peaceful river and the shake technique "rolls" things along in the Jordan! Seventy-four measures in length.
Linda McKechnie pulled out "all the stops" in her arrangement of this toe-tapping, old spiritual! Crammed full of chromatic accompaniment and iced with Biblical narration, the melody persists in declaring that Ezekiel saw something "mighty strange" up in that sky! The extra instruments are optional and any combination of them may be used. Set in C Major, G Major, Ab Major, and F Major, measures total 77.
Based on the traditional carol "We Three Kings," this setting resembles a gourmet meal with just the right amount of spicy techniques complementing rhythmic motives, and optional percussion parts. The structure is light to begin with and then grows more intense as the piece progresses. The ending chord features a gyro technique that gradually fades away. Percussion is Suspended Cymbal, Woodblock, Tambourine, Suspended Chimes, and Sandblocks. Measures total 101.
Handbells and piano combine in this original work written in memory of one who "was devoted to the Risen Saviour, Jesus Christ." The music reflects this devotion through passionate passages of lyrical melody and flowing accompaniment. The 163-measure score builds in intensity to a final 7-measure, chordal amen.
The flowing, gurgling, and splashing of water in a fountain are musically depicted through the use of sixteenth-note rhythmic figures, fresh harmonies, and the addition of a melodious flute part. The piece may also be rung under the subtitle "Visions".
“Sweet Little Jesus Boy” is a modern Christmas classic; and Jefferey Hall's setting for handbells, optional handchimes, and optional voices is both haunting and beautiful. These options make for a versatile addition to any repertoire. Set at an adagio tempo, much feeling should be put into this one. "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" is arranged in e minor and is 56 measures.
Keyboard and handbells combine in this musical nod to Beethoven’s beloved original. Bells open the work with a bright fanfare of pulsing eighth-note patterns. The keyboard then enters in measure 9 to make its own statement, accompanied by malleted bells. This imaginative dialogue between the instruments continues until the end in measure 124. This rendition is scored in C Major.

The hymn tune LOBE DEN HERREN takes on a surprisingly new twist in this swingy jazz arrangement, featuring improv-style solos written out for the flute, bass and drums. The solos are included in the handbell part, but they may be omitted and played only by the other instruments if an easier arrangement is desired. Jazz articulations are achieved in the handbell part through extensive use of RT, accents and grace notes. This piece will be a fresh addition to worship or concert.
This energetic setting of the tune ELLACOMBE uses syncopated percussion parts to build a polyrhythmic texture, providing a somewhat different flavor to this well-known martial hymn. Handbell entrances of derivative motives follow the percussion opening. These first 20 measures could easily be memorized and used as a processional. After a stately announcement of the tune, the middle section contains refreshing harmonic interest and a slower tempo for variety, followed by a rousing reprise of the hymn complete with percussion.
Jean Joseph Mouret's evergreen opening movement from the "Suite De Symphonies No. 1" is an elegant expression of joy. The easy rhythms and sectional repetitions make the work readily accessible. The fanfare-like sounds that permeate the piece make it an ideal prelude to a worship service or an excellent opening selection for a concert.
"Winter" from Vivaldi's "The Seasons" is the source of the beautiful Largo. This setting is a piece for all seasons as well as for multiple combinations of handbells, handchimes, and keyboard. A chordal 2-3 octave version may be rung alone, with provided keyboard accompaniment, or in combination with the 2-6 octave version. The 2-6 octave version may be rung alone or with the 2-3 octave version. When rung alone, the 2-6 octave edition is especially beautiful when played entirely on handchimes, without the octave doubling of the treble bells. This adaptable setting is perfect for beginning as well as "seasoned" ringers! Suitable for concert or worship.
"Rock Around the Clock" - that fifties classic - is now available for handbells, complete with the "trombone smear effect!" It is sure to become a favorite in the handbell concert repertoire. 3 and 4 octave choirs omit downstemmed notes in the bass clef, and use bass instrument part throughout. Parts for bass (guitar, string bass, euphonium, or tuba) and drum set are included with the full score.
Partially inspired by John Gillespie Magee Jr.'s famous poem, "High Flight," this creative arrangement of the spiritual features a soaring accompaniment as well as majestic harmonies reflective of the "wind-swept heights" and "sun-split clouds." Appropriate for services of remembrance, this work would also provide a time for reflection within a concert setting.
A variety of handbell techniques are employed in this delightful arrangement of the familiar carol. The mysterious, infectious quality of the arrangement makes it an appealing addition to the music for the holiday season.
The upbeat and rhythmic African flavor of this original composition will delight both ringers and listeners. The percussion instruments needed are djembe, 2 smaller African drums, shekere, and an African bell. However, congas, bongos, maracas, and cowbell may be substituted if necessary. Techniques included are malleted bells on the table, mallet lift, martellato, martellato lift, and shaking. "Sherekea usafari" means "celebrate the journey" in the Swahili language.
This calm, meditative original composition directly reflects the text of Psalm 121 in a lyrical style, with gentle, flowing rhythms and sweeping melodies. The words of the Psalm are printed along with the music, so ringers and directors will be able to relate the music to the text, thus enhancing interpretation. Although the organ and handchime parts are optional, they lend a beautiful richness and fullness to the sound. This piece is appropriate for Lent or times when themes of hope and strength are the focus.
The well-known Shaker hymn is arranged for double handbell and handchime choir, with the chime part being much easier than the bell part. The first section is gentle and relaxed, and then the hymn takes on a lively, dancing "jig" character, with malleted rhythmic bass bells and a bouncy, lilting melody. The handbell part can stand alone, and the handchime part may be played by a keyboard instrument if desired.
Strauss' captivating polka (Op. 332, RV 332) was first performed in its original orchestral version on March 16, 1869. The delightful melodies and sprightly rhythm will energize both players and audience members. Special bell techniques include mallets, ring touch, shakes, LV, and martellato. The original Hungarian title is translated as, "Hail to Hungary!"
This arrangement is written for two choirs, with the less-advanced group playing the part for handchime choir. If two choirs are not available, a keyboard may substitute for the handchime choir. The piece begins and ends with a bell peal gaily quoting “Joy to the World.” The middle section modulates to a new key with a dance-like arrangement for handbells alone and then moves back to the original key as the handchimes join for the closing section.
Stirring and energetic throughout, this medley intricately combines three hymns of praise with Alleluia refrains: the majestic LASST UNS ERFREUEN ("All Creatures of Our God and King" and "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow") and the processional-like SINE NOMINE ("For All the Saints"). It was on his travels to the West Indies that Arthur Benjamin discovered the native melodies on which this, his best-known composition, is based. "When In Our Music God Is Glorified" is an arrangement of the tune "Engelberg" that may be played by handbells alone, or in conjunction with organ, brass, timpani, SATB choir, and congregation. This glorious festival hymn arrangement begins with a fanfare introduction, followed by a straightforward setting of the first verse sung in unison. The second verse features the choir in four parts, accompanied by the bells and organ only. The brass and timpani join in on the third verse, which features a malleted or plucked bass line in the handbells, creating a march-like feel. A fanfare interlude precedes the majestic fourth verse, which features a soaring soprano descant, and a brief choral "Amen" concludes the arrangement. This hymn arrangement is perfect for worship, concert, or festival use.
A fifteenth-century English tune is arranged here with a dance-like, Renaissance flavor. With minimal bell changes and simple rhythms, it is a very accessible arrangement and may be conducted in three beats to the measure or in one, depending on the ability of the group. The musical styles are varied throughout, including a lilting dance; a flowing, beautiful section; a canon underscored by singing bells; a bold, chordal section; and an ethereal, transparent ending.

The hymn tune JERUSALEM by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (1848-1918) serves as the tune for what is considered to be England's most popular patriotic song. This engaging Latin rhythm pop song with was made famous in 1970 by Santana on their Abraxas album and had been covered by many groups since. This arrangement is straight forward and true to the original work and features the option of eight percussion instruments – including cow bell! – which may be added to your performance. Many well-applied techniques accentuate the rhythms and melodies. This will be a hit with ringers and audience alike!
British singer and songwriter Ted Hutchinson wrote this delightful carol about a cat and a mouse in the stable where Jesus was born and tells this wonderful story with much expression and love. It was recently introduced to American audiences by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir with David Archuleta (American Idol) vocalist. Derek has arranged it for handbells with vocal solo and includes a bit of the songs Love Came Down at Christmas, The Birthday of a King, and Infant Holy, Infant Lowly in this lovely setting. Techniques include Ring, TD, LV, and echo with a few Pl in the low bass. This will be a precious and beloved addition to your Christmas repertoire.
This lively work begins with a Latin feel in the shaker and adds the other four percussion instruments every two measures until the bass bells enter with rhythmic line that continues throughout. The engaging melody is featured in various bell octaves along with treble handchimes. Sections of suspended bells add a wash of color until it all resolves in the original form. The scoring is clean and which works very nicely in featuring the rhythm and melodies. Ringers and audience will be tapping their toes with the Latin rhythm.
Eight optional handchimes, ranging from G5-G6, organ, and brass, offer additional ensemble for this medley of the carols, 'Joy to the World, There's a Star in the East, and O Come All Ye Faithful". This arrangement of “Oh Holy Night” by Brian Seemann is written for 4-6 octaves of handbells with optional 3 octaves of handchimes and optional belltree. The handbell choir begins the piece and plays the first verse alone, with the standard triplet rhythms and accidentals found in the original. The second verse, marked by a tempo increase, sees the chimes and belltree soloist join the choir, with the chimes playing the melody, the choir providing the harmonic structure, and the soloist rendering a challenging obbligato descant. While the handbell part is relatively straight-forward, the belltree part is not for the faint of heart! However, this is a worthy challenge which will result in a sparkling performance of this much-loved piece. The belltree part is written within the handbell score and also is available separately.

This arrangement for handbells and optional choirchimes, guitar and percussion is a medley of three Latin carols: "Fum, Fum, Fum (Catalonian), Alegria (Puerto Rican) and A La Nanita Nana (Spanish)". Mr. Morris does a good job of making each carol special through use of different instruments and techniques.
Using the optional percussion,Wind chimes, suspended Cymbal, Tambourine, Timpani, Finger cymbals and Triangle, will add to the enjoyment of this classic Christmas offering. Mr. Sherman has capured the mood of the events surrounding Jesus's birth. The melody travels to different parts of the bell choir as the king's make their journey to Bethlehem. It ends very peacefully as, I'm sure, they stand in awe.
Based on LYONS and ITALIAN HYMN this triumphant setting includes 3 to 5-octaves of bells and optional organ/brass and timpani. The introduction builds intensity over a pedal point and with chromatic, chordal movement. "O Worship the King" then enters in open texture that thickens up later on to a march complete with a snare drum cadence. The next tune, "Come, Thou Almighty King" enters at measure seventy-two and is presented in hymn-like fashion. Would it surprise you to know that the arrangement ends with a big sound? Ensemble consists of two Trumpets, two Trombones, Snare drum and Timpani.

The opening section is light and bouncy, the middle is flowing with LV and echo technique and the final ending states the hymn tune AZMON from whence the title comes. This piece includes a good work out on sixteenth-note rhythms. Set in F Major and C Major, it is 95 measures.
Most fans of Hart Morris spiritual arrangements know they're fun, but also lots of work of rhythms and accidental changes. This arrangement, though certainly not simple, is nevertheless more accessible than others of Mr. Morris. The rhythms are syncopated, but repetitious and sharps and flats do occur, but are not unmanageable with a little work. A separate percussion part for snare and conga or bongo drums in available separately.
Arranger Hart Morris bases this energetic, harmonically suspenseful arrangement on the strong tune LASST UNS ERFREUEN (All Creatures of Our God and King). It works very well with just handbells and the optional handchimes, but adding the optional clarinet, bass, and drums will transform it into a genuine show stopper. Jimmy Webb's classic, made famous by Glen Campbell, gets the full Hart Morris treatment here, with lively rhythms and plenty of techniques. It still, however, remains true to the yearning spirit of the original. "Down by the Riverside" is offered in two different 2-octave versions: "A" is Level 2- and "B" is Level 1+, an important distinction in this case. The bonus piece "A Joyful Day" is a class composition project by Kath's 6th grade handbell class at Redeemer Classical School. The subtitle "Edakafad" is made up of the first initial of each student in the class.
