Based on an Israeli folk tune, this piece would be fun for any level 3 three octave group. (An optional Bb3 is included.) Teaching/learning opportunities are provided. 67 measures.
Hans Leo Hassler wrote the tune, Michael Burkhardt did an improvisation for keyboard in his "Five Lenten Hymn Improvisations", and Martha Lynn Thompson picked it up from there and transcribed the improvisation for 3-5 octaves of handbells and 3 octave of optional chimes. Triplet figures abound in a larghetto tempo, and the melody is found in varying ranges. A separate score is available for the chimes, making it accessible for a level one chime choir. A great way to combine adult and youth or children in a larger work. Chime part is on last page.
Despite looking more difficult, this is a great piece for a level 2 group. The eighth notes are in repeated patterns against the melody in the bass clef at first. Included in this piece are mildly syncopated rhythms and plenty of big chords all rung together. A middle reflective section may be played on handchimes. Then the bass clef melody returns against the upper eighth notes. LV, martellato, shakes, and RT give the ringers plenty of variety. 119 measures. Keys of F Major and a minor.
Martha Lynn Thompson has based her transcription on DARWALL'S 148th taken from Charles Callahan's Partita on Darwall's 148th for organ. The mood of the work is stately and ceremonious. The tonic and dominant of the key of C are emphasized with mart-lifts. The final section does contain several chromatic changes from chord to chord, which contributes to the plus on the level II marking. Triumphant shaken measures end the piece.

The opening of Brian Childers’ arrangement of this well-known melody builds slowly in intensity and complexity to the introduction of the tune, which appears in a fantasia-like setting. The accompaniment gives the lilting feeling of being on the sea, and the harmonies keep everyone on their toes. After a playful iteration of the theme, a slower, ethereal section appears with “Joy to the World” played delicately on optional auxillary bells such as Whitechapels or Silver Melody Bells. The main theme returns in triumphant style at the end for a grand and glorious conclusion!
