The title Stoccato is a combination of staccato and toccata, both of which describe the piece with its quick motion (toccata) and use of mallets (staccato.) Commissioned in honor of the musical ministry of Alice Ralston at Fist United Methodist Church of Midland, the musical theme is base on a musical representation of the letters A-L-I-C-E-R-A-L-S-T-O-N. The opening three statements of her name provide moments of reflections and remembrance, to be savored as the memories of Alice's work are treasured by all. The remainder of the piece is pure celebration, to be rung joyously. VIEW:  cgb812 LISTEN:

Composers and Arrangers:
Meyer K

Transit Time was inspired by the past few years’ increased focus on shipping and delivery of packages and mail to your home. One definition of transit time reads:  The amount of time spent when moving goods from its origin to its destination, which may or may not include intermediate stops and/or transfers. One can only imagine the ‘transportation journey’ your order or letter may experience… and Kurt has put that imagined journey into music! He opted to make it ‘upbeat’ at a clip to counter the oft-expressed ‘snail-mail’ moniker! The melody is a little motif that crawls up a step in each iteration plus a malleted bass groove to keep the rhythm and energy moving forward. There are a few legato sections which are quite lovely and offset the energy while not slowing the pace. Techniques include table mallet, mart, mart-lift, echo, Shake, LV and RT – all perfectly placed for musical effect. This is a piece that is sure to engage your ringers and entertain your audiences! The hymn Jerusalem is sung so extensively in England that it is sometimes referred to as England’s second national anthem. The poem, “And did those feet in ancient time” was written by English poet William Blake circa 1808 and was set to music by Sir Hubert Parry in 1917, later orchestrated by Edward Elgar. Thus it is no wonder that Fred Gramann conceived combining Elgar’s Nimrod from the “Enigma Variations” with Parry’s Jerusalem in this new work for handbells.  It is mostly Rung with well-placed LV passages, dynamics, and one beautifully crafted key change. Flowing sixteenth notes support the beautiful melodies throughout and the interplay between the two titles all join to create this uplifting and powerful work – perfect for any worship or concert event.   WATCH and LISTEN:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9swdES3-WtM

Here is a refreshingly new take on the standard, classic carol. Beginning slowly with singing bells, flowing eighth notes and handchimes, the listener can imagine the shepherds’ awe and amazement at the angels’ beautiful song proclaiming the Christ child’s birth. They hurry across the plain to find the child, depicted by malleted and thumb-damped bells in a spirited, rhythmic section in 7/8 time. With an LV eighth note accompaniment under a chordal treble melody sprinkled with a few 16th notes, the final stanza is majestic and full as the shepherds find the holy family and worship their newborn king. The eight maids a-milking are sad and weeping, while the nine ladies are dancing a waltz. Ten lords a-leaping do a Russian dance, and eleven pipers piping revert briefly to the famous Ukrainian Carol. It’s a Christmas crowd pleaser for a community or advanced church handbell ensemble! 190 measures.

This favorite song by Cole Porter was written specifically for his musical of the same name which opened in 1934. Nick’s arrangement is true to the original and beautifully adapted to handbell and handchime sounds and techniques which emphasize the rhythm and style. It begins with the temple or wood blocks and TD and Pl in the bells while handchimes ring the ‘verse’ melody which continues through the segue into the chorus/main theme of the tune. As it progresses, full use of bells bring energy which continues to build through gradual increases in tempo, and addition of mallets and RT emphasize the syncopation. A key change features just a few bells ushering in a solo percussion section … ‘percussion’ comprised of mallet handles striking bell handles and music folders plus foot stomps which abruptly welcome all bells at ff for the final return to this engaging title!  Nick’s gift for creative, top-notch arranging is apparent in his latest work and is guaranteed to be an audience – and ringer’s! – favorite! Again this is a piece that is not yet published and won't be until Bay View rolls around.  Please respect From the Top's and Fred's wishes by buying just for yourself and/or your friends going to Bay View this year. Fred has combined Johann Crüger’s “Nun danket alle Gott” and J.S. Bach’s “Sinfonia” from Cantata 29 into a stellar musical interplay in the ultimate Classical style. It is Rung throughout with many well-placed LV phrases, two Shakes, and no ‘stopped’ techniques. The Sinfonia is made up of extended passages of 16th notes while “Nun danket…” melody in quarter and half notes shines through. The contrapuntal interplay between the two unique titles is beautifully scored and groups will enjoy emphasizing the various distinctive lines as they weave in and out. The absence of articulations and a minimal number of accidentals belies the flawless technique and sheer musicianship this piece requires to be rung with clarity at tempo.
