Who would have ever thought that this great hymn could be effectively set as a Level 1 in 4/4 time? Bill Ingram's majestic arrangement does just that and makes this great praise hymn available to beginning ensembles. This latest of installement of the "Ringing Large" series (bigger notes!) also works well on handchimes. It is 47 measures and set in C Major.
Your ringers have fun with this music because of the ringing techniques used (Mallets and SW). Nice tune, colorful harmonies. This piece is level three only because of the meter.
Cynthia Dobrinski's best selling arrangement of this beloved timeless hymn is edited for quintet. If your small-ensemble ringers are looking for more of a challenge, this medium level quintet should provide it. A must have for any small ensemble library. The parts are all written on a grand staff with an additional treble stave for easier reading. Three octaves of bells are required. Cues are written into the score. 85 measures make this a focus piece. Key of Ab Major.
"Resignation" from Southern Harmony is the tune used in this easy-medium level quartet for 3 octaves. Performance notes are written right into the score to facilitate performance. There are several repeats and some other "road-mapping," but this eliminates any page turns.
Extensive performance notes are given right in the score for this 4-octave quartet on the favorite carol by Franz Gruber. Some parts require ringing harmonic intervals, which could be the reason for the difficulty level rating. The tempo is marked "Gently" and shouldn't be a problem. This selection is also available for full choir.
This quintet, written in 6/8 and 4/4, for 5 octaves is marked at a medium difficulty level and is a longer quintet at 102 measures in length. It is a good piece to challenge ringers. Mallets on tabled bells are scored in several parts.
This setting of the traditional American lullaby is for a full 5 octaves of handbells at a level 2 rating. Arranged for the Houston Chamber Ringers, this lilting work keeps all ringers involved and is scored with fresh harmonies. 84 measures long, it is scored in c minor.
Go under the sea with this evocative setting of Saint-Saens’ masterwork! Carnival of the Animals was composed by Saint-Saens in 1886, and he originally scored it for two pianos, strings, flute and piccolo, clarinet, glass harmonica, and xylophone. Cellist Charles Lebouc staged the first performance at a private concert on March 9, 1886. Saint-Saens was insistent that the work not be published in his lifetime for fear that it would mar his reputation as a composer of serious music. He later allowed publication of The Swan, the next-to-last movement, for cello with piano accompaniment. After his death, the firm of Durand in Paris published the entire work, which remains popular today. This "Aquarium" arrangement includes a soft dynamic level, slower tempo, and chromaticism to reflect the mystery of the aquatic life. 39 measures.
A Christmas Flourish is your perfect holiday concert opener. This dazzling piece is only a little over a minute long, but perfectly sets up your audience for an exciting ride. An optional repeat make the song suitable for a processional. 5-7 octaves of handbells, Level 3.
Dedicated for handchime ringers and their new chimes, this piece is set in A Major and includes a page turn. The treble clef music of this flexible score will stand alone with only 6 ringers using only bells or chimes; a 7th ringer can add B4-C5. With 8 ringers the melodic material (G#5-A6) can be rung on bells with the accompaniment (G#4 - F#5) played on chimes. The A6 requires a 3-octave set of bells; 2 octaves of chimes are sufficient. Although very easy eighth notes make it level 2, its repetitive chords make it easy to learn. It is 42 measures in length.
"Angelic Echoes" is a fun, energetic chordal 48-measure piece that is great for beginning ringers. "Angelic" tones are achieved by using major intervals, such as thirds. The fast tempo setting of quarter = 132 - 138 provides the main challenge that would make this a level 2 piece. Written in C Major, it is playable by 6 - 8 ringers by chimes or bells.
Very nice on chimes and also suitable for handbells, "Chiming Brightly" can be use for Christmas Eve or in general. A quarter note melody moves against an accompaniment of half notes in this level 1 composition for 2 octaves; the melodic theme occurs in different ranges. There is one easy bell change for F6. This 69 measure piece is set in C Major.
The melody, supported by a chordal accompaniment, moves around to each octave. The e minor key imparts a mysterious quality that is enhanced by using hand chimes. Playing it on handbells using mallets, marts, and thumb damps suggests a variety of forest sounds. This Level 2 piece has easy eighth note patterns with both pitches of a beamed pair in the same hand but no bell changes. Standard ringing positions #1 and #11 use only one bell. Measures total 53.
Chimes add a nice flavor to this 2-3 octave composition in g minor with its melody in the middle bells. Bell changes for all F's make it a level 1+; F5 has one very quick bell change. Suggestions are provided for ringing with 8, 9, 10 or 11 ringers. Measures total 56.
This collection for three was created to give first year ringers trio music they can play without mastering solo/ensemble style ringing skills. The four original songs use the standard ringing positions F5-D6 and Level 1 rhythms. Two pieces use LV technique; one song has two bell changes for F5. All four pieces use and are suitable for bells or chimes. Titles include, "Gloria, Ringers' Holiday, Happy Day Rondo," and "In the Old Forest."
"Folk Dance" in g minor and "Quick Step" in G Major are scored for three ringers (F5-D6) with an optional part for D5/E5. The lively tempo and eighth notes provide easy Level 2 challenges. A total of 55 measures, this piece is written in c minor.
Victory, an easy 2-octave march, works well for 6 ringers using only the treble clef. Suitable for church or school it is appropriate for Easter, patriotic themes, or general use. Except for very easy 8th notes in the 1st six measures, Victory is Level 1. Scored in G Major, this piece is 56 measures.
This composition for six ringers is appropriate for Christmas, Easter, or general use in church as well as school programs. Using the handbells Bb4-G6 makes it playable with only a 2 octave set. A short motive echoes between the octaves. "Peace" is classified as Level 2 because three ringers have bell changes: E5 and G5 have normal chromatic changes; B4 is asked to cover G6 in three consecutive measures. This piece is 78 measures in length.
Scored for 3 octaves, "Rejoice" is a good choice for any festive occasion. The first lively melodic theme starts in the highest bells and moves down through each octave. After a short B section in the upper bells, the lower two octaves ring the C melody. The D melody is in the bass clef with thumb damps in the highest bells. Themes A and B return at the end followed by a short coda based on the opening melody. Eighth notes plus bell changes for F5 and D6 make this a Level 2 composition. This 65-measure piece is in F Major.
As the title suggests, "In Sleepy Hollow" has an eerie quality created by a minor key and thumb damps. Eighth notes and bell changes for E5 and F5 make it a Level 2. A few marts for D5 add interest near the end. A 2-octave set of bells is needed. Four ringers can play it using D5-D6; a fifth ringer can add either bass clef position; six ringers need G4-D6. Set in g minor, this piece is 35 measures.
Subtitled "An Orison Anthem" (prayer anthem), this 3-octave original composition is feasible for handchimes or handbells but more effective when both are used as scored. Ringers of the middle and lower octaves will enjoy playing the melody and all ringers will have an opportunity to learn to balance a melodic line and accompaniment. Chimes play the first melody in the lower two octaves under a quiet, chordal accompaniment in the high bells. The 2nd melody, also in the lower registers, calls for bells while high chimes provide the chordal background. Chimes repeat the 1st melody in the middle range over a counter melody in the bass bells with the original chordal accompaniment in the high bells again. A few easy bell changes for E4 and E6 make it Level 1+. Composed in Eb Major, this piece is 49 measures.
Scored for 6 or 8 ringers, the melody of this Level 1 original composition for 2 octaves has an upward lift. Although suitable for handbells or handchimes, the timbre of the handchimes helps create the feeling of "soaring." Usable in church or school settings, it would make a good spring piece for a new group of ringers. It is 60 measures and is scored in C Major.
This flexible arrangement for 2 octaves contains two short, stately marches--"Grand March" and "Ceremonial March". There are no page turns in either one of these Level 1 compositions for 6 or 8 ringers, but "Ceremonial March" has one bell change for C6. Both pieces are scored in G Major.
A collection of Christmas carols for 6 ringers using 3 octaves of handbells or handchimes, this Level 2 arrangement includes a medley for Advent plus two additional carols. The medley entitled The Coming, features Watchman, Tell Us of the Night; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus and He Is Born. It can be played as a medley but any carol can be played separately. The carols Infant Holy, Infant Lowly and Go, Tell It on the Mountain round out the collection.
Either piece in "Clock Music" would provide an interesting change of pace for both ringers and audience. "The Clock Song" is delightfully descriptive. "Minutes Passing" conveys the steady ticking of a clock. Scored for six ringers, both original compositions are Level 2. There are no bell changes or page turns.
A lively original composition for 6 ringers, "The Four Horsemen" is suitable for church or school. Although the title alludes to the book of Revelation, it could be included in a secular program. Eighth notes plus bell changes for three positions make it Level 2. The exciting nature of the music lends itself to handbells more than handchimes. It is 85 measures and is scored in d minor.
If you need something light hearted for a secular program, consider choosing 4 ringers to play one of the original compositions from Light and Lively, a Level 2 collection. The lower bells ring the A-theme in Square Dance; the B section moves in 3rd’s and 6th’s. The Hunt is primarily homorhythmic; F5 has several bell changes. Scale Fun aptly describes this etude on the D major scale. Eighth Note Romp gives the D5/E5 ringer gets to use mallets.
Challenge the listeners to visualize what type of “splendor” this short composition for 5 ringers suggests. One ringer handles C5 and E5; F5–F6 use standard ringing positions. Eighth notes make it Level 2 but there are no bell changes.

This delightful rendition of a tune popular during the American Revolution would add a light-hearted touch to any secular program. It is scored for 5 ringers and optional snare drum or hand drum. Although it will stand alone without the drum, the percussion part helps evoke the original spirit of this Level 2 melody.
Scored for 6 ringers (G4 – D6) this medley of service songs includes The Army Song, Anchors Aweigh and The Marines’ Hymn. Each title could be played separately. The notes needed chart includes recommendations for accommodating difficult bell changes. Except for a few dotted eights and sixteenths, this is a Level 2 piece.
The lush harmonies of this beautiful hymn are enhanced by the use of chimes for the first statement of the melody. Bells are called for when the melody repeats. Five ringers are needed to cover the notes from B4 – E6; the E6 is assigned to the B4 ringer. Alternate assignments are suggested to alleviate difficult bell changes in this Level 2 arrangement. Two patriotic favorites, "America, the Beautiful" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", make up this Level 2 collection for five ringers (B4 – D6). "America, the Beautiful" is nice on chimes or bells; the key of B-flat makes it possible for the audience to hum or sing along if desired. "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", also in the key of B-flat, uses chimes in the middle section.
These two easy pieces work for six or eight ringers; six ringers use only the treble clef notes. The A section of "A Little March" has the melody in the lower treble clef bells with very easy eighth notes in the upper bells; a moving bass line throughout and RTs for all bells on the final chords add to the interest. "El Paso" also has the melody in the lower treble bells; with only six ringers this melody also functions as a moving bass line; the bass clef notes for ringers 7 and 8 use dotted half notes to add a moving bass line. There are no bell changes; the easy eighth notes require the classification of Level 2. There are no page turns within any individual piece. Although both titles are suitable for bells or chimes, they are more effective with bells.
Three of the titles in this collection for four ringers (D5—D6) are Level 1+ due to bell changes. Even though "Sonata #1" is not really a sonata, it is a pleasant little piece in g minor with bell changes for E5 and F5. The "Angel’s Song" is an easy piece in 3/4 meter with no bell changes. "Triste", also in g minor, is very pretty on chimes and would be suitable for any somber occasion. E5 and A5 have bell changes. The final song, "Tender Moment", is in D major with one bell change for C6. This selection is also nice on chimes.
Two well-known melodies from the Orient (Sakura and Arirang), scored for 6 ringers (D5–A6), are suitable for schools, some churches and ideal for spring programs. The arrangement of Sakura, a beautiful Japanese song about cherry blossoms found in school music books and in some hymnals, evokes an oriental flavor; the middle section calls to mind an improvisation on a koto. The melody of Arirang, a Korean song, stands out against a background of open chords. Both Level 2 settings are more effective on bells but will also work for chimes.
The use of two different historic church modes in this short collection for 2 octaves gives these two original compositions a seldom used musical sonority. Both titles, A Penitential Chant and Gothic Echoes, are suitable for general use by churches or schools; A Penitential Chant is also appropriate for Lent. These Level 2 pieces work well for 7 ringers because the G6 is optional.
This 2-octave composition will give your lower octave ringers a chance to play the melody in the first section of the piece. Although Solitude is scored for chimes and bells, it can be played with only one tone color. This easy piece is appropriate for general use in schools and churches and would be a good choice for Lent. A few easy bell changes for 3 ringers classify it as Level 1+.
Spirits Rising, a single composition for six ringers (D5-A6), requires a 3-octave set of bells. This Level 2 original melody has many 8th notes but the tempo is moderate at 88 bpm. The F5/G5 ringer has a couple bell changes that require weaving skills. This title is suitable for use in school or church.
Two of the three pieces in this collection of original, Level 2 compositions for F5–D6 use very easy 8th notes with both notes of the pair in the same hand. #1-"Twilight" has an easy bell change for F5. The 8th note pairs in #2-"Midnight Revelry" move between hands or between ringers; there are no bell changes. #3-"Sunshine Again" also has easy 8th notes; the A-section contains several short sequential fragments and a very quick bell change for C6 that could be covered by G5.
These two exuberant pieces for six ringers (D5–A6) would be especially fitting for Easter, Ascension, or any festive occasion. Even though #1-Exultation was written on Easter Sunday, 2015, it would be suitable for general use by churches or schools. #2-Crown Him with Many Crowns is appropriate for Ascension and Christ the King Sunday. Using the tune name DIADEMATA would also make it useful in other church services. Both titles are Level 2 due to bell changes and 8th notes.

This suite is a good choice for inexperienced ringers. The “safety in numbers” of full chords in all three original compositions, "Sun Up", "Sunny Meadow", and "Cheerful Morning", gives new ringers confidence. Brief comments at the beginning of each title indicate where the melody lies and asterisks (*) help ringers identify melodic notes buried within the chords. "Follow Me" uses a chordal melody, printed in red, over a bass line of moving quarter notes. It can be designated at Level 1 even though one pair of eighth notes occurs twice in the bass clef. There is a tempo change for the final three measures. "Angelic Hymn" also uses a chordal melody with the melodic notes doubled an octave lower. The use of red print for melodic notes makes it easy for ringers to identify the melody when it is buried in a chord. The bells used chart shows alternative assignments for the two quick bell changes. "Follow Me" is 33 measures and is scored in C Major. "Angelic Hymn" is 16 measures (but has a repeat) and is scored in Bb Major.
Two measures with a pair of moving eighth notes plus an easy bell change for A5 and a tempo change at the end classified this composition at Level 1+. Otherwise "Homeward Now" is a very easy piece with chords in the treble clef and a primarily monophonic line in the bass clef. Inexperienced ringers can easily identify the melody because it is printed in red. Although "Homeward Bound" is viable for 6 ringers using only the treble clef notes, the bass line definitely adds richness. 37 measures. Key of C Major.
A few bell changes for some ringers classify "Pastorale" as a Level 1+ composition in rondo form. The melodic themes in the rondo are marked to help ringers understand the thematic pattern of a rondo. The A-theme has nice echoes between the upper and middle bells, providing interest for the ringers in both octaves. As an aid to ringers and directors, the melody and other notes of equal importance are easy to identify because they are printed in red. Multiple key signatures (F and Bb) combine with tower swings, and echoes to add interest to this arrangement of the Johannes Brahms tune "Symphony." These two hymn arrangements by Susan Geschke are ideal for beginning ringers. However, Level 2 ensembles and higher should strive to ring these pieces with a faster tempo and a feeling of two pulses per measure. The hymn tunes are: "How Firm a Foundation" and "Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee". Familiarity with these tunes should aid in the learning process. Measures total 43.
Sondra Tucker takes this popular, contemporary hymn by David Haas and brings us a masterful arrangement. The range is 3 to 5 octaves of handbells with an option of utilizing 2 octaves of chimes. This level 3 piece is very accessible and would suit any traditional or contemporary worship. Arranged in F Major and G Major, measures total 70.
Linda Lamb takes us to the manger in Bethlehem as she gives us an arrangement consisting of "The Friendly Beasts" and "Away In a Manger." Using 2 to 3 octaves of handbells, this level 1+ piece includes an option of 2 octave chimes. The melody of "The Friendly Beasts" is surrounded by a gentle LV. An effective key change leads into "Away In a Manger." A whisper of "Silent Night" is heard at the end. Arranged in Bb Major and C Major, measures total 90.
Sharon Elery Rogers combines two separate chorales into one edition. Inspired by Hebrews 1:2, composer Kathleen Wissinger delivers an exciting and quite challenging original work for 3 to 5 octaves of handbells with an option for 3 to 5 octaves of chimes. The piece begins mysteriously in a free style form of plainchant and grows into a majestic, complex level 5+ work, which also utilizes tambourine or casaba and wind chimes. This composition will be a challenge for most groups but well worth the effort. The subtitle of "Rhapsody in A minor" would be appropriate for a more secular setting. A special "singing bowl" technique is employed. Written in a minor, D Major, and c minor, measures total 121.

Dividing the beat into two equal parts (eighth notes) is a huge step forward for any developing ensemble. Eighth notes appear in many different contexts in andbell repertoire. Meditation and Agitation (G 9220), introduced the simplest form of eighth notes where two eighth notes were played in the same hand. In terms of difficulty, Grand March and Awakening take eighth notes to the next level. In these pieces, the same ringer plays two eighth notes, but they are in different hands. To isolate this new skill, the eighth notes are surrounded by longer note values. There are no bell changes in either piece so that ringers can focus their attention exclusively on the rhythm.
