The name “Pavane and Galliard” comes from two Renaissance dances. During this period, dances were often paired and based on similar harmonic or melodic material. A slower dance would be followed by a faster dance. This model served as inspiration for the work. Although using the names of the dances, this composition bears little resemblance to the more subdued dances of that period. It is 171 measures in length.
