This is a sensitive and moving arrangement of Gustav Holst’s tune, CRANHAM, which has become a staple in Christmas repertoire. Opening in 3/4 meter before changing to 4/4, the handbells provide the introduction, setting a serene atmosphere for the entrance of the melody. Cello, other C instrument or handchimes provide the first statement of the melody line. A brief interlude in 3/4 introduces a second statement of the melody, performed by handbells with the solo instrument, or handchimes, providing the contrasting musical line.
