Composed for the 2012 International Handbell Symposium in Liverpool, England, this work is based on the tune “Liverpool” written by John Roberts (1822-1877). Heard throughout is a contrasting motif formed by spelling the word LIVERPOOL in musical notes. Several stately treatments of the tune are followed by a toccata-like section where all ringers have active, challenging roles to play. The final verse includes lyrics added by Fred Gramann that speak of the various roles played by bells and their power to bring unity. This can be sung by the ringers if desired and/or can be printed for the listeners so they can participate.
