Level 2 • Based on the “Southern Harmony” tune JEFFERSON, this Advent arrangement creates a quiet but energetic feeling. Techniques include pluck, thumb damp or mallets, and martellato. Level 2+ • He Is Born is a lively arrangement of the traditional eighteenth-century tune IL EST NÉ. This well-known French carol comes from the region of Provence. The dance-like character of this arrangement artfully illustrates the words of the carol, which tell us to "play the oboe and bagpipes merrily." Thumb damps, plucked notes, and table-malleted bells give the arrangement a toe-tapping vitality.
Level 2+ • This triumphant arrangement features a seamless weaving of the hymns "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "God the Omnipotent" as well as "Praise Ye the Lord of Hosts" by Saint-Saëns. Techniques include swings, echoes, TD, and LV, and this selection can be played with optional mallets.
Level 3 • This lively arrangement of the familiar carol is entirely malleted with the exception of two shakes (C6 and C7). It includes teaching elements for chromatics on the table that are more easily learned than with straight ringing. The opening boogie-style bass line gets the piece off to a great start with lots of mallet rolls for sustained notes and some stick clicking for visual interest, if desired. This high-energy piece is sure to be a favorite.
Level 1- • Sandra Eithun offers a second piece written with no bell changes and comprised solely of whole and half notes. "Prelude to Sunrise" is suitable for school or sacred settings and can be rung entirely on either handchimes or handbells. Scored with the young beginner in mind, this original piece can foster success for novices of any age. The techniques are very limited, allowing ringers to concentrate on the fundamentals of counting and dynamics. This work is an ideal first piece for beginning choirs. This easy 32-measure composition is written in C major.
Level 1+ • This selection from Beethoven's "Symphony No. 6" ("Pastoral") musically depicts the clearing of the sky following a thunderstorm and builds into a joyful, hymn-like melody. Written in 3/4 time rather than Beethoven's original 6/8 and using only quarter, half, and dotted-half notes, the arrangement is easy enough for beginning ringers yet contains dynamic contrasts and techniques to challenge more experienced ensembles as well. While especially fitting for school and community concert settings, the piece is also appropriate for worship in celebrating the grandeur of God's creation.
Level 2 • This quiet, gentle setting incorporates "How Far Is It to Bethlehem," another traditional English tune. The two melodies offer opportunities for ringers to play musically and distinguish between accompaniment and melody notes as the tunes move from one register to another. The piece is appropriate for the Christmas season, and it is especially useful for Christmas Eve and candlelight services.
Level 2 • This meditative setting of the hymn tune BEECHER emphasizes the contemplative nature of the "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" text, inviting the listener to enjoy the peaceful melody.
Level 2 • Heartwarming and full of gentle grace, Susan Geschke's original piece "Quiet Waters" will appeal to anyone who likes swings. All ringers swing at some point during the piece, and the sheer physicality of the continuous swinging motion is delightful. Extensively tested with many of the composer's choirs of all ages, the response is always, "Let's ring it again!"
Level 3 • "Advent Fantasy" combines the tunes GENEVAN 42 ("Comfort, Comfort Now My People"); PICARDY ("Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence"); NUN KOMM, DER HEIDEN HEILAND ("Savior of the Nations, Come"); and PUER NOBIS ("On Jordan's Bank the Baptist's Cry"). This wonderful medley of advent hymns will be a delightful addition to handbell choir libraries and will be useful in many situations.
Level 3+ • Take your handbell choir on a Caribbean musical journey this season with "A Caribbean Christmas." Featuring the well-known carols "Angels We Have Heard on High" (GLORIA) and "Angels from the Realms of Glory" (REGENT SQUARE), this arrangement is filled with lively tropical rhythms, island syncopations, and many bell techniques. It will find a welcome home in either secular or sacred settings.
Level 3 • This spirited arrangement includes a great walking bass line for the bass bell ringers, along with gyros, shakes, and lots of malleting for all. The final stanza includes some "sticking" as in a soft shoe dance, with the mallets both playfully striking the foam and clicking together. In a short, solemn middle section, "In the Garden" is rung on handchimes, both providing contrast and reminding us of the varying emotions of life’s journey and of God's presence through them all. This arrangement will be a great choice for worship, concert, and festival use.
Level 4 • This familiar setting, also known in German as "Wachet auf, Ruft uns die Stimme"--or in English, "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying"--is an energetic, dance-like piece that lends itself well to handbells. The bass accompaniment, written for mallets (or pluck), offers support to the treble accompaniment that dances in preparation for the stately entrance of the melody. Repetition makes this setting accessible and easy to learn for the ringers. It is appropriate for worship services during the Advent season, and it promises to be an exciting concert piece, as well.
