Two Manger Carols is a setting for handbells, optional handchimes, flute, and oboe incorporating Whence Comes this Rush of Wings Afar (also known as Carol of the Birds) and Sleep of the Child Jesus. The opening phrase uses the singing bell technique, over which the flute plays a figure representing the “rush of wings” and the oboe introduces the carol melody. Throughout the arrangement, the melody moves between handchimes, flute, oboe, and handbells. Care must be taken to balance the dynamics of the various instruments, especially taking care that the oboe doesn’t overpower the ensemble. As the piece slows to the end, carefully observe dynamics and musically interpret the text, “King of Glory, sleep.”
