This traditional Gaelic lullaby was collected in the Hebrides by Marjorie Kennedy-Fraser (1857-1930). The legend is that the faery who sang the song was in love with a young girl whom he met when she came out to cut the bracken (which is a fern). Upon learning of the affair her parents kept her locked up in their home. When she didn’t come anymore, the faery became despondent and sang this song.
